Welcome to This Brown Skin, a skincare blog for people of color. My name is Onyinye and I am a skincare enthusiast.
My Journey
For many years I was really unhappy with my skin. I battled with some of the nastiest acne, the damage it did to my skin and the resultant self-esteem issues that came with it. I had tried practically all the drugstore brands available with scattered results. Then came the prescriptions, RetinA, oral antibiotics and some very expensive acne systems. While some products yielded some results, none actually cleared my skin. So, I ended up jumping ship on each one due to different side effects that I could not tolerate.
Some years later I decided to take a step back and reassess my skin and the methods I was using to treat it. My research showed that I was specifically dealing with bad hormonal acne. A few months later, a hormone test confirmed my hormone imbalance. Knowing what I was dealing with was empowering because it meant I was able to use a targeted treatment for my acne; I did and my skin cleared up.
Finally, I had cleared my acne but was now faced with secondary skin issues namely post acne hyperpigmentation and scarring. As I started searching for the most effective and safe skincare products to use on my dark skin, I realized that there was not much of a centralized space with specific skincare and product information for women who looked like me, BROWN.
